Since its founding in 1986 as a ministry of Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity Counseling and Training Center’s mission has been to provide high-quality counseling services to its clients through the donated services of mental health professionals.
Historically, TCTC has been one of only two mental health facilities in New Orleans that has offered counseling services on a sliding scale basis, thereby making counseling services available to all. Annually, the Center’s staff sees more than 500 clients. Even prior to the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, the demand for services far outstripped the center’s capacity.
TCTC relies on grants and donations to subsidize the actual cost of providing professional mental health counseling to those in need. Annually, TCTC provides over $625,000 in services to the community on a budget of less than $200,000. We gratefully accept donations from organizations and individuals who wish to support the mission of TCTC.
TCTC in partnership with Loyola University New Orleans presents A Journey of Healing: Healing Family Wounds & the Power of Forgiveness. Francis James’ documentary movie, The Gift of Time, chronicles the journey of his family from the diagnosis of the recurrence of his mother’s breast cancer until the time of her death. The conscious decision of his mother to teach her children how to die opened many doors that allowed them to address past losses, abuse, and anticipatory grief in a manner which increased their intimacy and fostered forgiveness. This three-part workshop will include a viewing of the film , a panel discussion including Francis James with four licensed marriage and family therapists, Dr. Susan Cooley and John Shalett, Trinity Counseling and Training Center; Dr. Tim Dwyer, Loyola University, and Dr. Judy Miranti, Xavier University of Louisiana. Following the discussion, break out groups will meet to examine topics such as use of film in the classroom and clinic, incorporation of spiritual issues in therapy, and grief. Each group will then share their ideas with the workshop attendees. Join us in using this wonderful film as a vehicle to increase clinical awareness and training issues while serving as a witness to the James’ family’s powerful story!
